From Independent candidate for Governor Collin Corbett:

Lawmaker Corruption and Cover Ups Prove How Broken Our System is in IL

“Independent leadership in Illinois will bring a much-needed check-and-balance to our government.”

PALATINE, IL — This week and over the past month, corruption by Illinois lawmakers has once again reared its ugly head.

Representative Harry Benton has finally resigned, Representative Carol Ammons and her husband were just indicted, and their daughter was indicted last month.

Independent candidate for Governor Collin Corbett reacted: “If lawmaker corruption over the past month hasn’t convinced you our system is broken in Illinois, nothing will.”

Representative Harry Benton finally resigned after a lengthy investigation by the Legislative Inspector General, allegedly over sexual harassment allegations. The Speaker of the House has continued to cover up the explicit details, shielding Benton from potential criminal consequences or losing his position as Wheatland Township Highway Commissioner.

Representative Carol Ammons was just indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly taking cash kickbacks from state grants and campaign funds, then lying to the FBI and obstructing their investigation.

Ammons’ husband, Aaron, the Champaign County Clerk, was also indicted. Aaron was previously pardoned and had his record expunged of a felony drug conviction by former Governor Pat Quinn, who actively supported Carol’s political rise.

Last month, the Ammons’ daughter, Titianna, Champaign County’s Chief Deputy Circuit Clerk and former county board member, was indicted for allegedly defrauding the US Department of Labor and Illinois Department of Employment Security during COVID.

Collin concluded: “With no political balance in Illinois, there is no one to hold the super-majority party accountable, which naturally leads to corruption. The Speaker can cover up Benton’s misconduct with no repercussions. The Ammons family’s corruption has been an open secret for years, yet it took the feds to finally do something about it.

This is why we need Independent leadership in Illinois. We will bring a much-needed check-and-balance to our government.”
