From the State’s Attorney:

MCHENRY MAN DENIED PRETRIAL RELEASE AFTER ALLEGED RANDOM STABBING OF OUT-OF STATE VISITOR

McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese announced today that the Honorable Judge Michael Feetterer granted the State’s petition to deny pretrial release for Colin Foster, 28, of McHenry, Illinois.

Foster appeared in Initial Appearance Court on May 19, 2026, charged with

  • one count of Attempt First Degree Murder,
  • a Class X felony and
  • two counts of Aggravated Battery, Class 3 felonies.

Evidence presented in court established that shortly after midnight on May 16, 2026, Foster allegedly launched a violent and unprovoked attack on two men standing in the parking lot just outside the Hampton Inn in McHenry.

The victims had traveled from out of state to attend a dog show in the area when the Foster aggressively approached them and stabbed one of the men multiple times.

The victim suffered eight stab wounds, including a wound to the chest directly above his heart.

Authorities alleged that the second man intervened and helped save the victim’s life during the attack.

Investigators further established that neither victim had ever met or interacted with Foster prior to the attack and had no known connection to him.

State’s Attorney Freese stated: “This was an appalling and senseless act of violence carried out against two unsuspecting visitors to our community.

“We are grateful that the victim survived this brutal attack and wish him strength as he continues to recover.

“We are pleased that the Court granted our petition to detain this dangerous man.

“Every resident and visitor in McHenry County deserves to feel safe from random acts of violence.”

Foster’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 17, 2026, in Courtroom 302.

Members of the public are reminded that a criminal complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
