The Illinois Build Act: A Massive State Power Grab
In May 2026, the heartbeat of our community is at risk. Governor Pritzker and Chicago Democrats have introduced the Illinois Build Act (HB 5626 / SB 4060). This aggressive legislation is designed to strip away local control by allowing state authorities to override municipal zoning decisions. If this bill passes, the decisions about what happens in our backyards will no longer be determined by those who live here, but by bureaucrats in Springfield.
This isn’t just about zoning; it’s about our constitutional right to local autonomy. The Build Act creates a pathway for the state to bypass local community input with no exceptions and no local vote. We must stand together as citizens of McHenry County to protect our jurisdiction from these overreaching state mandates.
