State Rep. DeLoris Doederlein served as a Republican member of the Illinois House from 1987 to 1993.

DeLoris and Fred Doederlein.

She replaced Republican Jill Zwick, who retired in favor of supporting her husband Mort.

Both State Senator Jack Schaffer and I (in electoral remission) supported Doederlein.

After Doederlein defeated Mort Zwick, Jill ran into me in the Stratton Building in Springfield observing, “You guys really did a number on Mort.”

I wasn’t quite sure if she was happy we did so or not.

The Zwicks subsequently divorced and Mort end up winning a Cook County Appellate Court seat as a Democrat.

While I was in remission (having lost my race for State Comptroller in 1982), I often went over the the Illinois House floor when the House was in session after I finished the day at Manager of the Bureau of Benefits to the Department of Central Management Services.”

I remember standing next to DeLoris when the Sears Tax Increment Financing District bill was bring voted upon.

“My district wouldn’t be in favor of this, would they?” she asked.

I reenforced her instinct that the TIF was a really bad deal.

More recently, DeLoris passed her driver’s license at age 99.

She will be one hundred Monday, but is celebrating with friends on Sunday afternoon from 1-5 at the VFW in West Dundee (just west of the Fox River).

Come congratulate this incredible woman’s life.
