Propane Tank Incident Results in Serious Injuries
On Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 12:19 p.m., the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District was dispatched to the 2900 block of Riverside Drive in unincorporated McHenry for a reported burn injury.
While responding, crews were advised that a propane tank had exploded in an individual’s face, prompting a medical helicopter to be placed on standby.
Upon arrival, firefighters found no evidence of an explosion and located an adult male with visible burn injuries.
A 20lb propane tank was actively burning in the driveway near a wooden trailer and garage.
Within minutes, the tank off-gassed the remaining contents and extinguished itself.
No other property was damaged.
While the patient was treated on scene by paramedics, the medical helicopter was stood down.
The patient was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with injuries believed to be serious.
Further evaluation will be conducted at the hospital.
