From the State’s Attorney:
MCHENRY COUNTY STATE’S ATTORNEY SECURES DETENTION IN ARMED HOME INVASION CASE
McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese announced today that the Honorable Judge Michael Zasadil granted the State’s petition to deny pretrial release for Jim Burmeister, 53, of McHenry, Illinois, following his initial court appearance on April 25, 2026.
Burmeister is charged with Home Invasion, a Class X felony, stemming from a disturbing and targeted incident that occurred on April 24, 2026.
According to evidence presented in court, Burmeister—angered over a claimed debt related to construction work—sent a series of threatening text messages to the victim before escalating the situation into a terrifying confrontation.
Burmeister then went to the victim’s home, forced his way inside without permission, and, while armed with a shotgun, threatened to shoot the victim inside their own residence. He ultimately fled the scene without discharging the weapon.
State’s Attorney Freese condemned the incident in strong terms, stating:
“This was a calculated and deeply alarming act.
“No one should have to face armed threats inside their own home.
There were certainly better options to resolve this dispute.
“We will continue to take decisive action to protect our community and hold offenders accountable.”
Burmeister remains in custody pending further proceedings. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 29, 2026.
The public is reminded that a criminal complaint contains only charges and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial, at which the State bears the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt
