
When I was State Representative in the 1970’s, a Carpentersville man came into my office and laid out a scheme to defraud auto insurance companies.
Sears Easy Method Driving School required its instructors to report they had been injured for every fender bender.
My constituent refused and was fired.
Turns out Sears Easy Method Driving School had bribed the Secretary of State’s employee with a trip to Las Vegas to paper over any problems.
The driving school, however, made a serious mistake.
It sued Allstate.
Allstate, of course, was owned by Sears.
So, when a licensee of Sears came up against a subsidiary, what you would image occurred.
Sears Easy Method Driving School went out of business.
Now comes private driving schools soliciting those who can’t speak or read English to apply for Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CLDs).
And such drivers have ended up in deadly accidents.
“States issue CDLs based on the say-so of driving schools. Many drivers have never had a representative from Department of Motor Vehicles with them in the vehicle during a driving test,” Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies Mark Krikorian told The Daily Signal.

In 2024, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced the availability of a Spanish Translation for CDL Written Test.
More than 20 states “, including Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Texas, in offering this test in Spanish.
“In addition to the test, the Secretary of State’s office has also translated CDL study guide materials, making them available in Spanish.”
