McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese announces that on December 2, 2025, Aneta Marsek, 46, of Wonder Lake, Illinois, was sentenced to twenty-two years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by the Honorable Judge Mark R. Gerhardt.

With the input and agreement from the victim, Marsek entered into a negotiated plea to Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, a Class X felony, which carries a sentencing range from six to thirty years imprisonment.

On October 10, 2024, at 11:05 a.m., members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of two persons shot at a residential property in unincorporated Wonder Lake.

Upon arrival, it was determined that the injured parties in question were husband and wife.

The male victim was discovered to have sustained a serious gunshot wound, while Aneta Marsek was observed with a superficial injury.

The victim immediately reported that he had been shot by Aneta Marsek, while she claimed that both she and her husband had been shot by an unknown intruder.

Both parties were transported to area hospitals.

An exhaustive investigation led to the recovery of the gun that had been hidden [by] Aneta Marsek following the incident.

Further forensic testing revealed conclusively that Aneta Marsek was the lone shooter and that her injury was the  result of her being disarmed by the victim.

Truth-in-Sentencing will require that Marsek serve 85 percent of her 22 year sentence prior to release from custody. U

pon release, Marsek will be placed on Mandatory Supervised Release for a period of three years.
