From State Rep. Marty McLaughlin:
Martin McLaughlin to Introduce “Truth in Toll Transparency Act”
BARRINGTON, Ill. — State Representative Martin McLaughlin announced today that he will introduce the Truth in Toll Transparency Act, legislation requiring the Illinois Tollway to clearly post toll rates where motorists can see them before entering a toll road.
McLaughlin said the proposal is rooted in a simple principle: Illinois drivers deserve to know what they are being charged before they incur the cost.
“What would you think if you walked into a restaurant, looked at the menu, and discovered there were no prices?” McLaughlin said.
“Most people would walk right back out.
“Yet that’s exactly how the Illinois Tollway operates today.
“Instead of clearly displaying toll prices, drivers are directed to a QR code or website.
“That’s not transparency, and it’s certainly not what taxpayers deserve.”
McLaughlin noted that Illinois motorists are already burdened by rising taxes, fees, and the increasing cost of everyday necessities.
“Families across Illinois are stretching every dollar to pay for groceries, gasoline, utilities, insurance, and housing,” McLaughlin said.
“After years of being taxed and fee’d to death, the least state government can do is tell people exactly what they will be charged before they use a toll road.”
The Truth in Toll Transparency Act would require the Illinois Tollway to prominently display current toll rates at all tolling locations in a manner that is visible to approaching motorists.
Any approved toll increases would also have to be clearly posted before they take effect, allowing drivers to make informed decisions about their travel.
“This isn’t about whether someone supports or opposes tolls,” McLaughlin said.
“It’s about honesty and accountability. Government should never hide the price of a public service behind a QR code or a website.
“If you’re going to charge Illinois families more, have the decency to tell them what the price is.”
McLaughlin said transparency is one of the cornerstones of good government.
“Illinois drivers deserve truth in pricing just as consumers do in every other aspect of their lives.
“My legislation will ensure that motorists know the cost before they pay it, not after the fact. That’s simply common sense.”
McLaughlin said the Truth in Toll Transparency Act reflects his continued commitment to making state government more transparent, accountable, and responsive to taxpayers.
