From the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District:

Residential Structure Fire on S. Benbrook Avenue

On Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 4:38 p.m., the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District responded to the 3000 block of S. Benbrook Avenue for a reported residential structure fire.

The initial company arrived within minutes and observed smoke showing from all sides of a single-story residence located on a short dead end stretch of roadway.

Firefighters deployed hose lines and established a rural water supply operation due to the absence of fire hydrants in the area.

Crews were advised the fire was possibly located in a rear bedroom and made entry to the home, where they encountered significant interior storage conditions that limited access and slowed fire attack efforts.

Despite these challenges, firefighters were able to make a quick knock on the fire.

Due to the extent of interior conditions and fire involvement, crews were forced to open up the rear of the structure to access the seat of the fire and check for extension.

The fire was primarily contained to the bedroom; however, heavy smoke and water damage was present throughout the home, leaving it uninhabitable.

The homeowner is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The residence contained numerous small animals.

Due to the interior conditions of the home, not all areas were accessible during the investigation, and it is unknown if any animals perished as a result of the fire.

It is believed that 2 to 3 cats, along with several small birds and other animals, were unaccounted for. Select crews remained on scene for approximately 3 hours conducting the investigation and completing overhaul operations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District. The District appreciates the assistance of all responding agencies and the dispatchers who coordinated the response.
