Here’s a new one.
Illinois requires tailpipe tests to see if one’s vehicle’s motor is operating properly.
Up to now, one had to drive to the Crystal Lake facility.
When the legislature was pretty much forced by the Federal EPA to create (maybe extend) the testing area because of unmet federal air quality standards to include eastern McHenry County, I was concern that people would have to drive Lake, Kane or Cook County.
I didn’t approve of the program because of its really faulty testing measurements.
Our area got included because bad air was detected in Kenosha, Wisconsin!
Sounds stupid, doesn’t it?
If one had a friend in Wonder Lake or Lake in the Hills who would allow you to use his/her address, your car didn’t have to get tested.
After the bill passed I called the Deputy Director of the Illinois EPA and asked if a new facility could be opened in McHenry County.
And, one day I noticed construction of one in Crystal Lake.
No way I was going to take credit for a program I opposed.
Now comes a new service from the government.
Temporary sites are being set up so local residents don’t have to drive to Crystal Lake or, now, Antioch.
The first I have seen is scheduled for Johnsburg on Saturday, Marcy 21st.
Below is the notice from the Village of Johnsburg:

Mobile Testing Units (MTUs) are now available to Illinois motorists in the area. MTUs are specially equipped emissions testing vans that are deployed to select locations to provide additional vehicle emissions testing options for the convenience of motorists.
MTUs are coming to the Village of Johnsburg’s Hiller Park March 17- March 21 from 10. to 4.
Motorists can use the Vehicle Eligibility Check Tool by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or License Plate Number to identify if their vehicles are eligible to test. Click here for further information.
