From the State’s Attorney:

JASON F. SPITZER SENTENCED TO 13.5 YEARS IN THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS FOR UNLAWFUL POSSESSION OF A FIREARM, AGGRAVATED DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM AND POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE

McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese announces that on September 4, 2025, Jason F. Spitzer, 40, of Woodstock, IL, was sentenced to 13.5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offenses of

  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Felon,
  • Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and
  • Possession of Methamphetamine.

The sentence was handed down by the Honorable Kane County Judge Yetter after entering a negotiated plea of guilty.

On June 20, 2024, the Woodstock Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Spitzer.

A K9 unit was utilized during the traffic stop that resulted in a positive hit for narcotics.

Spitzer was found to be in possession of 10 grams of methamphetamine in his front pocket.

At the time, Spitzer was on probation for felony possession of methamphetamine on a separate case.  Spitzer was released pre-trial pending this case.

On August 19, 2024, Spitzer was walking his dog near downtown Woodstock.

Spitzer began arguing with an individual nearby.

When the individual drove past Spitzer, Spitzer shot his 9mm handgun at the vehicle four times at close range.

A search warrant was executed Spitzer’s residence, where the firearm was recovered by Woodstock Police.

Spitzer was then detained pretrial during the pendency of both matters.

This case was successfully prosecuted by McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office Special Prosecutor William Bruce.

State’s Attorney Freese commends the diligent efforts of members of the Woodstock Police Department in their thorough investigation into both cases and continuing to keep the citizens of Woodstock safe.
