MCHENRY POLICE INVESTIGATE FIREARM INCIDENT
On Friday, August, 2026 at approximately 4:15 P.M., the McHenry Police Department responded to a residence in the 3200 block of Hunter Path, McHenry, for a reported disturbance and possible shots fired.
The police department then received a call from a subject who wanted the police department to respond to his residence because he had fired a handgun into the air.
The subject, a 40-year-old male, also reported his mother had been killed.
He was in his residence and would refuse to exit when law enforcement arrived.
The McHenry Police Department, assisted by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, established a perimeter around the residence.
After contacting the subject, the preliminary investigation determined he may have been suffering from a mental health crisis.
Officers were unable to determine if there were any other occupants in the residence and if medical services were needed.
After approximately two hours, the subject voluntarily exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.
He was then transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for treatment.
A handgun was collected at the scene and placed into evidence.
Due to information received there were additional armed subjects in the residence, the McHenry Police Department requested the assistance of the Emergency Services Team of the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (commonly referred to as NIPAS) for a search.
NIPAS is a joint venture of suburban municipal police agencies to provide mutual aid.
The McHenry Police Department has been a long-time member of NIPAS.
That information proved to be false.
This incident is still under investigation; therefore, criminal charges are possible.
The McHenry Police Department wants to thank the community for their patience during this incident.
