CRYSTAL LAKE MAN SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS IN PRISON FOR SMASH-AND-GRAB ATTEMPT AT CRYSTAL LAKE VAPE SHOP
McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese announces that Victor Diaz, 24, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, has been sentenced to four years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to the offense of Burglary, a Class 2 felony.
Diaz was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Mark Gerhardt following his negotiated plea of guilty.
The conviction stems from a brazen early morning smash-and-grab burglary that targeted a Crystal Lake vape shop on February 20, 2026.
At approximately 7:00 a.m., Diaz, with a female accomplice in the passenger seat, drove a stolen Jeep through the front entrance of a vape shop in Crystal Lake in an attempt to burglarize the business.
The vehicle became lodged inside the building before the Diaz and his passenger abandoned the Jeep and fled the scene on foot without successfully stealing merchandise.
Investigators later determined the Crystal Lake burglary was not an isolated incident.
Approximately one and a half hours earlier, the same person had used the same stolen Jeep to ram into a vape shop in Bartlett in an almost identical smash-and-grab burglary.
Detectives from the Crystal Lake Police Department conducted an extensive investigation that combined surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and advanced cellular data analysis.
Investigators utilized sophisticated cellular mapping techniques to identify a single cellular device that was present at both the Bartlett and Crystal Lake burglary scenes, as well as in a nearby residential neighborhood, at the precise times corroborated by video surveillance.
That investigative breakthrough allowed detectives to identify the passenger involved in the offenses.
After obtaining and analyzing data extracted from the passenger’s cellular phone, investigators were able to identify Diaz as the driver of the stolen Jeep and the individual responsible for carrying out the burglary.
State’s Attorney Randi Freese commended Detective Douglas Meyer from the Crystal Lake Police Department for his meticulous investigation and the innovative investigative techniques that led to this positive identification and conviction.
“This case demonstrates that criminals cannot assume they will escape accountability simply because they flee the scene,” Freese said.
“Through exceptional investigative work and the effective use of technology, law enforcement was able to reconstruct this man’s movements and identify those responsible for these dangerous crimes.
“Smash-and-grab burglaries place businesses, employees, and the public at significant risk, and we will continue to aggressively prosecute those who commit them.”
State’s Attorney Freese also thanks the Bartlett Police Department for its assistance during the investigation and the prosecutors assigned to the case for securing this conviction
