The case came out of Mississippi, where state law says ballots postmarked by election day can be counted up to five days after election day.

Illinois has a similar law, except such ballots can be counted up to fourteen days after election day.

Two Republican-appointed judges–Amy Coney Barrett and John Roberts–joined up with the three Democrats–Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson–in the 5-4 deccision.

In the minorioty were Republicans Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh.

“The election-day statutes say nothing about ballot receipt, and we cannot add to the words Congress chose,” Barrett wrote in her opinoin.

Maybe there is away to fake a postmark, but, considering howslow mail delilvery has become, the concept seems rational to me.
