LITH police announce results of distracted driving safety campaign
LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — The Lake in the Hills Police Department made six arrests and issued 127 citations
during the statewide distracted driving safety campaign that ran throughout April.
Officers were especially vigilant about distracted driving behaviors involving the use of cell phones, sending a clear message to “put your phone away or pay.”
There were 59 drivers who received a ticket for operating a motor vehicle while using an electronic communication device.
“Using a cell phone behind the wheel not only endangers your own life, but it puts everyone on the road at risk,” said Sgt. Christopher Miller, who oversees the local enforcement program.
“Even a quick glance at your phone can have devastating consequences. It’s never worth it.”
If a driver needs to send a message or return a call, they should pull over and park or use hands-free technology that keeps their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.
“Many lives are lost because drivers allow distractions to get in the way of their main task, which is safely
operating their motor vehicle,” Miller said.
“Do your job behind the wheel, and everything else can wait.”
Six arrests were made for driving while license suspended, driving while license revoked, having no valid
license and possession of a cancelled driver’s license.
Other citations issued over the 30-day period included
- 21 for speeding;
- 10 for an expired registration;
- 10 for registration suspended;
- 10 for failure to wear a seat belt;
- 6 for operating an uninsured motor vehicle;
- 2 for improper lane usage;
- 1 for disregarding a traffic control device;
- 1 for an improper turn; and
- 1 for operating a vehicle without a safety certificate.
The department joined forces with the Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) in the enforcement campaign during Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
The safety effort was funded by a federal highway safety grant administered by IDOT.
