From the Freedom Caucus:
Legislature should focus on getting violent offenders off the street – not banning ICE
Springfield, IL – The limits on federal detention center the Illinois House has passed is another example of Democrats prioritizing their far-left agenda over the safety and well-being of Illinois citizens, according to the Illinois Freedom Caucus.
House Bill 5024 places restriction on where federal detention centers, which includes facilities used for restraining or securing individuals detained for immigration-related purposes, or processing individuals for deportation, or temporarily holding individuals while their citizenship status is determined.
Under the bill, such facilities would be prohibited within 1,500 feet of schools, day care centers, day care homes, cemeteries, public parks, forest preserves, public housing, private residences, and places of religious worship. The Illinois Freedom Caucus is issuing the following statement:
“Leave it to the Democrats to respond to the brutal murder of Sheridan Gorman by making it harder for federal law enforcement officials to rid our streets of violent offenders.
The intent of this legislation is to make it virtually impossible for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Department of Homeland Security to do their jobs. If this legislation becomes law, there can be no immigration processing center anywhere in the City or the suburbs and the radical leftists pushing this bill know this, but they do not care.
They do not care that their policies led directly to the murder of Sheridan Gorman whose murder should have served as a wake-up call to work WITH ICE – not against them. We call on the Illinois Senate to be the grown ups the feckless, irresponsible leadership in the House refuses to be. Protect our citizens and end this madness. It is time to put the citizens of this state ahead of the far-left’s misguided priorities.”
