NICHOLAS S. KACHIROUBAS SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS FOR CLASS 2 CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGE
McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese announces that on November 20, 2025, Nicholas S. Kachiroubas, 46, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, was sentenced to five years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for a Class 2 felony Possession of Child Pornography charge.
Kachiroubas was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Mark Gerhardt after entering a negotiated plea of guilty on November 7, 2025.
On March 30, 2024, Crystal Lake Police began a forensic investigation after Kachiroubas filed a police report alleging that he received threats of extortion through Snapchat after exchanging illicit photographs with two other Snapchat users.
However, on April 4, 2024, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office received information from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children through DePaul University’s Office of Public Safety that an unidentified, out-of-state, high-school student reported inappropriate online enticement through Snapchat from a person who identified themselves as a DePaul University professor.
Following a collaborative law enforcement investigation, Kachiroubas was identified as the DePaul professor in question.
An in-depth forensic investigation revealed that Kachiroubas was in possession of one image of child pornography that had been stored in his Snapchat account.
The defendant’s same Snapchat account also contained several conversations where he unsuccessfully attempted to solicit photographs of Snapchat users who purported to be underage.
In accordance with a negotiated plea, Kachiroubas entered a guilty plea to the highest charge in return for a five-year prison sentence.
Under Illinois law, the Class 2 felony is probation-eligible and carries a sentencing range of three to seven years imprisonment.
The remaining Class 4 counts carried a range of one to three years imprisonment and would not impose consecutive sentences.
Upon release from custody, Kachiroubas will be placed on Mandatory Supervised Release for a period of three years to life.
He must also register as a sex offender for the remainder of his natural life.
Although Kachiroubas had no prior criminal history and all charges were probation-eligible, the seriousness of this case warranted this significant prison term.
State’s Attorney Freese would like to commend the work of McHenry County Sheriff’s Detective Sylvia Dekirmandjian, the Crystal Lake Police Department, and DePaul University Public Safety for their collaborative work in this investigation.
This case was successfully prosecuted by Chief of Staff Ashley Romito and Special Prosecutor William Bruce.
