IVAN RUIZ SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS IN THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS FOR UNLAWFUL POSSESSION WITH INTENT TO DISTRIBUTE A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese announces that on September 10, 2025, Ivan Ruiz, age 36, of Cicero, Illinois, was sentenced to eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of unlawful possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

Ruiz was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Tiffany Davis, having been found guilty on May 13, 2025, after a two-day jury trial. 

On May 8, 2024, and May 29, 2024, members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force completed two successful cocaine transactions with Ruiz, unbeknownst to him, at the Jewel Osco located in Fox River Grove. 

The total weight of the cocaine from the two transactions was fifty-five grams. 

Ultimately, Ruiz was found guilty at jury trial of two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance. 

Ruiz will serve a term of eight years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by eighteen months of mandatory supervised release. 

This case was successfully prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Matt Broderson and Steve Gregorowicz.
