Back in 2000, after I had lost the Republican Primary Election to Rosemary Kurtz, a push was on the lowered gasoline taxes because the price of fuel was so high.
I even made a button with black letters saying “No Taxes” to wear in the Secretary of State’s auditorium, where the Illinois House was meeting while renovations were being made in the House chambers by House Speaker Michael Madigan.
(Madigan wanted to erase the early 1970’s renovation made by House Speaker Bob Blair. Madigan turned the blue motif into a red one, reportedly a historical replication. Included was the removal of Blair’s name on a brass plaque attached to the front of the Clerk’s podium.)
Since Democrats were in control, I’m guessing the tax reduction effort was not successful…just like it won’t be this time.
