From the State’s Attorney:
WONDER LAKE MAN SENTENCED TO SIX-YEAR PRISON SENTENCE IN FATAL DRUG DELIVERY CASE
McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese announces that Carlos M. Paiz, 20, of Wonder Lake, has been sentenced to six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to the offense of Drug-Induced Homicide.
The sentence was imposed by the Honorable Mark Gerhardt on March 18, 2026.
This conviction stems from the tragic death of an eighteen-year-old man, who was found deceased in his home on October 25, 2024.
An investigation by the Wonder Lake Police Department and subsequent autopsy, determined that the victim died from drug toxicity involving MDMA.
Detectives were able to trace the fatal dose directly to Paiz, who sold the substance that ultimately took the young man’s life.
Paiz ultimately admitted his role and pleaded guilty. He will serve six years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by two years of Mandatory Supervised Release.
“Under Truth-in-Sentencing laws, Paiz must serve at least 75% of his sentence.
State’s Attorney Freese underscored the office’s unwavering commitment to pursuing those who profit from deadly drugs:
“This case represents exactly why we treat overdose deaths as homicide investigations. When drug dealers choose to sell dangerous, illegal substances, they are putting lives at risk—and in this case, it cost a young man his life. In our county, we investigate every overdose death and will aggressively prosecute those who deliver fatal illegal drugs.
“Let this case put drug dealers on notice: in McHenry County, those who distribute lethal narcotics will be identified, charged, and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office recognizes the thorough and dedicated work of the Wonder Lake Police Department officers in identifying the source of the fatal drugs and ensuring accountability.
This case was successfully prosecuted by First Assistant State’s Attorney Ashur Youash and Assistant State’s Attorney Desiree Sierens.
