Found in Illinois Politico is a report on a proposal to created a “commemorative” holiday to honor Emmett Till:
Remembering Emmett: State Rep. Kimberly DuBuclet has introduced House Bill 4323 to designate July 25 — the birthday of Emmett Till — as a commemorative holiday. The measure would honor Till’s life and legacy, encouraging schools, communities, and officials to observe the day with educational and reflective programming.
That is the same approach used by sponsors of the Martin Luther King holiday in 1973.
