With NPR off the Federal public dole, a history of Public Radio is embedded in an article by that name.
The article explaining the day states,
“While we don’t know the exact origin of this day, we know it was founded to honor the birth of radio broadcasting.”
So, apparently, the day is not specific to National Public Radio.
Contrast all the angst about NPR’s having to pay it’s own way with how Christians finally support such radio stations and have since they went on the air.
