State Sen. Don DeWitte is recovering from surgery last month to combat Adenocarcinoma, a form of prostate cancer, he told supporters in an email Monday, according to the Daily Herald.

“I am currently recuperating out of state with family and intend to be back in Springfield in mid-February,” he wrote, adding, “The good news is that because of early detection, and the fact that the cancer never had a chance to spread, my prognosis is excellent.”

DeWitte announced his retirement in July, prior to his diagnosis of prostrate cancer.
