From State Rep. Joe Sosnowski:

Rep. Sosnowski statement on Chicago Bears announcement regarding expansion of relocation search

ROCKFORD, Ill. – State Representative Joe Sosnowski (R-Rockford) issued the following statement today in response to the Chicago Bears’ announcement that they are expanding their relocation search to include Northwest Indiana:

“I fully support the Bears moving to Arlington Heights.  It is a great location for their fan base and season ticket holders.

“I am against corporate bailouts where the State of Illinois creates winners and losers by giving taxpayer money to one entity.

“I have not seen details of their proposal, but it is my understanding that the Bears are asking for some sort of property tax freeze.

“Illinois currently has the 2nd highest property taxes in the nation and all taxpayers deserve relief.

“I have several bills that would benefit all residents.

“Just one business should not be a beneficiary of a property tax deal.

“I understand the Bears are asking for infrastructure improvements and have been negotiating that with the Village of Arlington Heights.

“I am in favor of improving roadways and traffic signals to help with traffic flow.

“I see this as a role of the government, but the Bears request for nearly $1 billion includes unspecified site and utility work that is typically the responsibility of the developer.

“One case in point for reference is when the Ricketts’ bought the Chicago Cubs in October 2009.

To my knowledge, they received no subsidies.

“In fact, they purchased additional property around the stadium to enhance the experience and the value of their franchise. This is an example of a responsible development that is not subsidized by the taxpayers.”

Representative Sosnowski serves the 69th District which includes portions of Winnebago, Boone, and McHenry Counties.
