Last year the McHenry County Republican Party supported imposition of a quarter of a cent sales tax with the promise that the $11.8 million levied for the Mental Health Board would disappear.

The levy was decreased, but not by that amount.

Part of it went to buy squad cars for the Sheriff’s Department.

This year, led by Finance Committee Chairman Mike Skala, a recommendation was made to use a loophole in the Property Tax Cap allowing a local government to levy the highest amount over the last three years.

The idea was controversial.

But the tax hikers so far have the majority to break the Republicans’ 2024 spring promise.

And the Northwest Herald noticed.

Twice.

Can’t you just see headlines like that showing up a year from now in County Board races?

But, that’s not the half of it.

Republican tax hawk citizens are angry.

Prior to the Tuesday night meeting Johnson sent out the email below urging people to contact their County Board members. My post has contact information, as well as County Board District Maps.

But, you could send a message to the whole county board here.

I’m not suggested that these Republicans will not vote for Republican County Board members, but disgusted, less partisan traditional GOP voters might just skip a County Board race where the incumbent votes to break the Party’s tax cut promise.

On top of the above, Democrats are energized.

No Kings demonstration on Route 14 in Crystal Lake.

In the article below, one can see the demonstrators in Crystal Lake.

There were also roadside rallies in Algonquin and McHenry.

So, hiking taxes after promising to cut them and activated Democrats.

If that doesn’t add up to a Republican Party in trouble, I don’t know what combination of factors could be worse.
