From the State’s Attorney:
DYLAN M. ABBOTT SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS AND SIX MONTHS IN THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS FOR AGGRAVATED DOMESTIC BATTERY
McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi L. Freese announces that on September 24, 2025, Dylan M. Abbott, 33, of Marengo, Illinois, was sentenced to five years and six months in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the offense of Aggravated Domestic Battery.

Abbott was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Mark Gerhardt after entering a negotiated plea of guilty.
In February of 2025, the Marengo Police Department was called to the scene of a domestic disturbance by the neighbors of the victim.
Once at the scene police were able to hear the victim and her small child crying out for help and police made entry into the home.
They found Abbott walking out of the bedroom where the victim and her child were located.
The victim reported she had been strangled and lost consciousness multiple times while she struggled with Abbott.
She was found to have markings on her neck consistent with strangulation.
Abbott was taken into custody.
Today, Abbott pled guilty to the most serious offense he was charged with, Aggravated Domestic Battery.
He was sentenced to five years and six months in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Truth in sentencing requires that Abbott serve 85% of his time in prison followed by four years of mandatory supervised release, formerly known as parole.
In addition, a criminal order of protection was granted on behalf of the victim that will remain in place for two years following Abbott’s completion of mandatory supervised release.
State’s Attorney Freese would like to thank Marengo Police Officers McGinely and Phelps along with Seargent Boyce for their excellent work on this case. Their prompt response and immediate action stopped this brutal attack from becoming worse.
These cases were successfully prosecuted by Elizabeth Vonau.
