From the Marengo Police:

Call at Indian Oaks Park and the Subsequent Traffic Stop at Casey’s Gas Station in Marengo

On August 16th at approximately 12:50 PM, officers from the Marengo Police Department were dispatched to the Indian Oaks Park for what was being reported as a possible child abduction attempt.

The subject made alarming statements referencing children, but no physical attempt to abduct a child was made.

Officers were able to gather information that identified the possible suspect. T

he subject was described a white male driving a black 2-door Mercedes-Benz.

A license plate was provided for the vehicle.

Around 6:30 PM that evening, Officers were alerted to what was dispatched as a road rage incident, in which the complainant came to Marengo PD being followed by a subject in a black Mercedes-Benz coupe.

The license plate appeared to match that provided in the earlier call. The Mercedes was located stopped near a gas pump at the Casey’s Gas Station at 200 E. Grant Highway in Marengo.

Officers attempted to perform a high-risk traffic stop on the vehicle due to the severity of the criminal activity reported.

The driver did not comply with commands to shut the car off or show his hands.

After several more units arrived from the McHenry County Sheriff’s department, the driver eventually stepped out of the car and was taken into custody.

The driver was taken to and evaluated at a local hospital.

Preliminary charges from the traffic stop were issued and are as follows:

The driver was identified as Brandon Kanehl, 35, of Johnson Street, Marengo, IL and was charged with

  • one count of Obstructing a Peace Officer,
  • one count of Resisting a Peace Officer, and
  • one count of Possession of Cannabis by Driver.

Brandon Kanehl was cited and released with a notice to appear in court.

The investigation into the original call is ongoing and additional charges are being reviewed.
