There was lots of sturm und drang at the 6:30 to 11 o’clock meeting of the Crystal Lake Park Board last night at the Main Beach House, but the biggest news was Crystal Lake Mayor Haig Haleblian revelation that he had a commitment for a $1 million donation to help buy the $4.2 million HealthBridge.

This was his second pitch.

Besides the million dollar gift he has tacked down, he said he was working on another person for a similar donation.

If the Mayor is so enthusiastic about obtaining public ownership of HealthBridge, I continue to suggest that the city buy the complex.

After all, the city did not trust the Park District to develop and run the old Vulcan gravel pit, so there is precedence for the city to run a recreational entity like HealthBridge.

Being a Home Rule entity, the city has the ability to level non-referendum bonds without referendum.

If the the cost is $4.2 million and Mayor Haleblian thinks he can obtain $2 million from private sources, the city could borrow the other $2.2 million and buy the abandoned complex.
