COURT GRANTS STATE’S ATTORNEY’S OFFICE’S PETITION TO DETAIN MAN WHO CAUSED MULTIPLE VEHICLE CRASH CAUSING SERIOUS INJURIES AND FLED SCENE
McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese announced today that the Honorable Judge Cynthia Lamb granted the State’s motion to deny pretrial release for Deondrae Clements, 35, of Elgin.
Clements appeared in Initial Appearance Court on July 9, 2025, charged with Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, Aggravated Reckless Driving and Driving While License Suspended.
Evidence was presented in court that Clements had fled from the scene of a vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Route 31 and Three Oaks Road in Crystal Lake on July 8, 2025.
Cary police officers located Clements near the intersection of Three Oaks Road and Route 14 and attempted to make a traffic stop.
Clements entered a nearby parking lot, seemingly complying with the traffic stop.
Instead, he fled from the officers at a high rate of speed.
Officers attempted to follow Clements but decided to terminate the pursuit due to his high rate of speed.
Witnesses saw Clements drive through a red light, resulting in Clements being struck by an oncoming vehicle.
Clements’ vehicle spun out and struck another vehicle on the road.
Multiple people were injured as a result of these crashes.
Clements fled on foot from the scene of the crash but was wearing a GPS monitor due to a pending case in Kane County for which GPS was one of the pretrial release conditions that had been ordered.
Officers were able to track Clements via the GPS monitor and was taken into custody.
Ms. Freese wishes to commend the Crystal Lake Police Department and Cary Police Department for their investigative work in this case.
Ms. Freese also thanks the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department for their immediate response and treatment of the victims in this case.
This investigation and case were handled by McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorneys Joseph Tarczon, Garrett Miller and Deputy Criminal Chief Margaret O’Brien.
Clements’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 30, 2025.
