From the Village of Lakewood:

Lakewood Police Department Public Notice: E-Bike Safety and Regulations

The Lakewood Police Department reminds residents of the laws governing E-Bike usage.

Recently, there has been a significant increase in complaints regarding teens riding E-Bikes in a dangerous or careless manner within and through the Village limits and into neighboring towns.

In response, the Lakewood Police Chief met with the Chiefs of Lake in the Hills Police and Huntley Police to collaborate on solutions for this growing concern.

These jurisdictions are currently reviewing local laws to ensure they address safety concerns for both E-Bike riders and others using our roads.

Lakewood Police have received Criminal Damage to Property reports linked to reckless E-Bike riders in recent weeks.

Additionally, a 19-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries while operating an E-Bike in Huntley last week.

This issue is escalating rapidly, and law enforcement agencies fear that more children will be at risk this summer due to the increasing prevalence of unsafe riding behaviors.

Residents should also note that E-Scooters are illegal to use anywhere in the Village of Lakewood under Illinois law.

Health officials have raised concerns about the dramatic rise in Emergency Room visits related to E-Bike accidents.

According to Children’s Health of Orange County (CHOC)“Injuries sustained while riding e-bikes are more severe compared to manual bikes due to the speed and lack of operator skill.” (CHOC, 2022)
