I’m doubting that anyone working on the editorial side of the Chicago Tribune was around around for the Regional Transportation Authority referendum debate in the spring of 1974.
That is the only explanation I can think of for the following paragraph in its editorial today:

A single fare system was promised fifty-one years ago.
The Tribune editorial writer says it’s “long overdue.”
That seems like an understatement.
Unfortunately, the Tribune did not observe that supporters of mass transportation tax subsidies have a long history of making false promises.
