From the Coroner:

McHenry County Coroner, Dr. Michael Rein, announced that his office was contacted on April 11, 2025 at around 5:30 am by MIAT (McHenry County Major Investigative Assistance Team) to investigate an apparent shooting death at the 300 block of South Briarwood Rd in Crystal Lake.

The decedent’s name is Darrick Lawrence, age 46, of Crystal Lake.

An autopsy is scheduled for later today.

The Coroner’s Office is continuing to work collaboratively with MIAT during this investigation.

Deputy-Involved Shooting in Crystal Lake

On Thursday, April 10 at approximately 4:23 p.m., McHenry County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched for a domestic dispute in the 300 block of Briarwood Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake.

Deputies made contact with an individual who was armed with a firearm.

The suspect then barricaded himself in the residence.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team were dispatched to the scene. 

The Hostage Negotiation Team was in active conversation with the suspect in an effort to get him out safely, which proved unsuccessful, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was struck and later pronounced deceased.

Per state statute, the investigation has been turned over to the Major Investigation Assistance Team (MIAT) in conjunction with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Interviews and evidence, including a review of body-worn camera footage, will all be conducted by MIAT.

The Sheriff’s Office will provide updates as they become available.
