Turning Point Praises State's Attorney Lou Bianchi

A story I planned to write fell through the Rod Blagojevich arrest day crack.

Jane Farmer, Executive Director of Turning Point wrote a letter which I'd like to share with you. It follows:
Congratulations on the recent conviction regarding the 911 domestic violence call with (the) Harvard Police Department. Assistant State's Attorney Patrick Kenneally did an outstanding job of prosecuting this case.

I am impressed with the work Patrick did as well as your stand on holding domestic violence perpetrators accountable for their actions.

This certainly proves once again that evidence based prosecution not only can work, it truly does work.

As you well know, domestic violence cases are difficult to handle, often having a victim recant or flee based on fear or lack of options.

This was an amazing case and will help keep our county that much safer.

Thank you again for the work you and your staff do and I applaud your office's efforts to continue assisting Turning Point in our mission to “Confront Violence Against Women and Children in McHenry County.”

PEACE4ALL “Hanging in There”

I wish I had permission to use that photo of the little kitten hanging on by his claws.

This one of a woman who just got Christmas presents for her kids they would otherwise not have had will have to do.

A client is hugging Cindy Smith after receiving presents donated by local organizations, mainly local women's groups you can read about here.

It would epitomize the month-to-month fight for Crystal Lake's domestic violence and rape prevention organization on Route 14 just north of the West Crystal Lake Avenue traffic light.

PEACE4ALL held a tent rummage sale on Country Club Road in mid-August.

$2,500 was raised.

Despite the fact that only one person is being paid (someone to assist the ones who do the unpaid counseling), it still takes about $3,000 a month to keep the agency open.

The rummage sale allows PEACE4ALL to stay open through September.

Fund raisers are scheduled for October and November.

Wonder why the agency should survive?

Read what it did for one woman:
“Peace 4 All is a Christian organization that has been helping me through the end of this ordeal. I wish I had known about them earlier.

“They are a free institution.

“They assist and counsel both men and women who have been or are being victimized either physically or emotionally.

“They are non-profit-entirely dependent upon donation organization.

“Their site is www.peace4allonline.org. The site is not very well produced. They are in need of someone to volunteer to develop a better one.)“

PEACE4ALL Plans to Pamper 4 P.E.A.C.E.

Crystal Lake's domestic violence and rape prevention agency for both women and men, PEACE4ALL is holding a “pampering” fund raiser.

Every time I write an article, I have to go back and look up what the "P.E.A.C.E." part of the name stands for.

It is an acronym that stands for:
"PEACE 4 ALL believes in providing education to our all of our community members and they are available for speaking engagements for your groups or classes of adults and children," I have in the earlier article.

Running an all-volunteer agency without government support still takes money, or course.

I wrote a belated article about how the group coordinated the distribution of Christmas presents to area families in need. Women in Management, the Women's Leadership Network and members of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce Newcomers, among many others, were involved in the project.

The group's press release follows:
P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL

PAMPERING 4 P.E.A.C.E., a fundraiser held by P.E.A.C.E 4 ALL will be on Sunday, April 27th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Wolf Professional Center, 44 N. Virginia Street, Suite 1A2 in Crystal Lake.

P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL is a non-profit domestic violence and sexual assault organization and this event is in honor of National Child Abuse Awareness Month and the creation of the A.R.K. Children’s Center that will be opening in September. The A.R.K. Children’s Center will be the first and only children’s abuse center in McHenry County.

All members of the community are invited to PAMPERING 4 P.E.A.C.E. Tickets are just $25.00 per person in advance and $30.00 at the door.

Each ticket holder will receive an unlimited number of services to include
  • professional stylists offering haircuts by Wild Hair Salon,
  • special occasions make-up and hair featuring Bare Minerals by Avon provided by Stacy Phannenstill,
  • manicures and pedicures by Cosmetology Spa Institute,
  • Dr. Consultations and massage therapy by Strelcheck Chiropractic,
  • spinal checks by Chiro One,
  • wellness screenings by Dr. Prudy, and
  • wellness education by Susan Nemcek.
A special Chinese Auction and “Retail Therapy” area will be provided by numerous local businesses for your shopping enjoyment.

Food and refreshments will also be provided by COSTCO, Starbucks and other local businesses.

Your participation and donations go to benefit families in our community.

Tickets can be purchased or donations can be made by telephone, fax, and mail or by using our website. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover credit cards. Call P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL’s business office at (815) 455-2457 today to reserve your tickets as this event is highly anticipated to be sold out well in advance! P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL’s mailing address is P.O. Box 1392, Crystal Lake, IL, 60039-1392. Fax: (815) 455-8250 or please visit our website at: www.peace4allonline.org.
The photos are from my Christmas gifts story. On top are some of the undistributed presents. Cindy Smith can be seen hugging a client next. At the bottom is a poster used in counseling.

Laura Washington on Gun Control Views of Chicago Blacks She Knows

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Laura Washington was on the Chicago Week in Review panel Friday night.

Much of the discussion was about gun control measures defeated in Springfield. Of course, none of the panelists were on the John Lott “More Guns, Less Crime” page. (I would highly recommend the 2000 book. Buy the paperback version, however, it has some updates not in the hardback.)

“They don't trust the police,” liberal Laura Washington said of blacks she knows. “They want their own protection.”

That's precisely what I argued in a 2002 radio when I was running for governor against Rod Blagojevich and Jim Ryan on the Libertarian Party ticket.

That ad that drew lots of negative comments from the liberal talk show hosts in Chicago. You can read it below:
Radio Ad – 911 Personal Security Act

Sound of man trying to break down the door.

Ex-husband: Open that door, (bleep).

Woman: (Dials 911) Come on. Answer.

Operator: 911, What is your emergency?

Woman: My ex-husband’s trying to break in. Send help. I’m going upstairs. (Hangs up phone.)

(Sound of woman running upstairs.)

(Sound of door being forcibly opened.)

Woman: (Dials 911) Come on.

Operator: 911, What is your emergency?

Woman: He’s in the house. He’s coming upstairs. I’m locking the bedroom door. (Hangs up the phone.)

(Sound of dead bolt turning. Man running up stairs.)

Man: I’ll teach you!

Woman: (Dials 911) Answer the phone.

Operator: 911, What is your emergency?

Woman: Send help! He’s kicking in the bed room door.

(Sound of shot. Sound of woman falling to floor, pulling phone with her, slight ring)

Pause

Announcer: Sometimes the police can’t be where you need them when you need them. Cal Skinner, Libertarian candidate for Governor, thinks you should have the right to defend yourself, even in Chicago.

Elect Cal Skinner Governor. Skinner is the only candidate who knows that the police can’t always be where you need them when you need them.

Skinner: Vote Libertarian for a change. Vote Libertarian for a REAL CHANGE.

Announcer: Paid for by Skinner4Governor.org. Reece Reed, Treasurer
Host Joel Weisman, who, of course, is responsible for selecting his show's guests, added this comment after one of the panelists said that all of the proposals made common sense:
”It's not common sense to those who oppose it.”
Weisman is certainly correct. I wonder WTTW why won't run a real debate on gun control with John Lott as one of the participants.

The ad, by the way, was inspired by an NRA TV ad that I saw at an ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) convention at Travis City, Michigan, in 1992. It was chilling, but the National Rifle Association could not find it, so we had to write it ourselves.

During 2002, something very close to this scenario occurred to a black Chicago woman. I'm sure most people thought that was where we got the idea.

= = = = =
I've always wondered if Barrington Hills' Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Lichtman would still be alive if they had had a gun to protect themselves from Peter Hommerson, who just got life for murdering them. Lichtman and his wife Kay were shot. Then, Hommerson torched their home. The article you see was in Saturday's Chicago Tribune. The picture of the burning house was on WBBM-TV.

Three Crystal Lake Businessmen Provide Computers and Connections for PEACE4ALL

Three Crystal Lake businessmen have stepped up to the plate to help Crystal Lake's

P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL Receives Gift of Computers
from Echelon Computers, Inc.
to Further Their Efforts of Family Violence Prevention & Education

Crystal Lake, Illinois – April 10, 2007 — P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL, a non-profit organization today announced receiving the gift of 10 computers from John Niziolek II, President of Echelon Computers, Inc. of Crystal Lake.

In addition to Echelon Computers assistance, two other Crystal Lake businesses donated their services for the computers to become operable at P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL.

Marty Walter of Walter Alarm Service donated the wiring and Scott Hughes of Simple Logic donated the connection for all of the computers.

P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL is a domestic violence and sexual assault agency that serves clients from throughout McHenry County and the northeast Illinois area.

“We are extremely grateful for John’s generosity as his gift of these computers and software has allowed for P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL to become more proficient in serving our clients as well as their needs in addition to running the day-to-day operations of the agency,” said Bobbi Allen, Marketing and Development Director for P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL

“With the great assistance of Walter Alarm Service and Simple Logic, we are now able to save an incredible amount of time and we are very thankful for everyone’s assistance and hard work.”

P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL’s mission statement is located within the “P.E.A.C.E.” acronym portion of their name, which stands for:
  • Prevent,
  • Educate, and
  • Advocate, in our
  • Community, in order to
  • End domestic violence and sexual assault.
In addition to the prevention and educational programs, P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL provides a Hotline that is answered by trained advocates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week where assistance is provided to callers.

The Hotline number is
(815) 455-SAFE (7233).

“P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL continuously strives to help end community violence at its core, which is family violence,” said Cindy Smith, Executive Director of P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL.

Kane County Village Trustee Resigns as Obama Delegate

Don't call your African-American kids “monkeys” when they are climbing in trees near your home, if you want to be a delegate to the Democratic Party National Convention pledged to Barack Obama.

A simmering neighborhood fight in Carpentersville between an African American family and Hispanic Village Trustee Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski resulted in her resignation as an elected delegate pledged to Obama.

Yesterday, I thought it had the potential for more than the $75 ticket for disorderly conduct.

When approached by the Chicago Sun-Times, an Obama operative convinced the village official to relinquish her summer spot of honor. Most of Hispanic delegates will be pledged to Hillary Clinton.

Because of the flap, the Hispanic leader has announced she will not run for re-election to the village board. She has been a defender of the Latino community in the contentious fight in town.

This is the second trustee to get in trouble with the law. Illegal alien opponent Paul Humpfer was found guilty of domestic battery. His resignation as village trustee was sought at the last board meeting.

A Christmas Story Still Worth Telling

I know the twelve days of Christmas have passed, but before Christmas I stopped over at the Route 14 Crystal Lake offices of PEACE4ALL.

It's a non-profit domestic violence, sexual assault counseling and prevention organization for men, women and children.

When I walked in the back of the building lower level entrance at the P.E.A.C.E. 4 ALL's North Virginia Street location, there were presents everywhere!

There were gift bags on the floor, wrapped presents stacked on tables, and even more presents along with clothing, household and food pantry items in a side room.

One woman with a passel of boys from more than ten miles away was there to pick up their family's presents.

Women in Management members bought 240 gifts and provided 25 gift bags.

The Women's Leadership Network provided a huge array of presents for two big families and additionally, they provided over $200 in gift cards to grocery, gas and retail stores.

The PEACE portion of their name is an acronym that stands for:
PEACE 4 ALL believes in providing education to our all of our community members and they are available for speaking engagements for your groups or classes of adults and children.

PEACE4ALL has identified several key needs in our community and they are providing many gap-filling services that are not available through other agencies in the area.

PEACE4ALL is in the process of finishing the building of their transitional housing.

It will provide for up to an unheard of 18 month stay for clients.

There they can recover and receive the necessary counseling, job training, schooling, and ultimately, the healing they need in order for them to move forward to lead productive lives in our community.

Homelessness is a difficult situation alone, but then add the part of domestic violence on top of the homelessness and the problems are multiplied.

PEACE4ALL provides sexual assault services for persons who are ages 17 and under, which is a key population that is not being served through any other avenue in the county. Situations like date rape and the important pieces of educating our youth in these areas are what PEACE4ALL is embracing to help make a difference in the youth of our community.

In the Fall, PEACE4ALL will be opening their Children's Center in a Trout Valley day care facility. It will specialize in providing help to children who have witnessed family violence in order to aide them in their healing and recovery.

Bobbi Allen, the new outreach person, told me that she recently introduced herself at a meeting of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce Newcomers meeting.

"Afterwards seven people came up," she told me.

"The first was a victim. The other six said, 'We want to help.'"

Marlowe Middle School in Huntley had taken on another family with seven children whose father had left the family without resources to finance Christmas presents.

I asked Cindy Smith, one of the co-founders for some statistics.

She told me prior to Christmas that 485 people had been helped in the last year, about 85% women and 15% men.

I know I met a couple of men who had been helped during this past fall's "garage sale."

As with all not-for-profit organizations, there is always a wish list.

PEACE4ALL is looking for
computers with Windows XP, laptops to do emergency orders of protection, compassionate people who would like to be trained as advocates, volunteers to help with event planning and in the business office, projectors, desks & chairs, office supplies (copy paper, printer ink, but you need to call for details, file folders, stamps), non-perishable goods, food and gas gift cards, food coupons, small bottles of water & juice, shampoo, deodorant, and, of course, gifts of money are always welcome and truly are needed at this time.
The newly launched website for PEACE4ALL is:

www.peace4allonline.org.

To volunteer, provide assistance or to reach PEACE4ALL with questions or to schedule a speaking engagement, please call their business office at (815) 455-2457 or you can write to them via email at: info@peace4allonline.org.

= = = = =
The top two pictures are in reverse order. The client in the office picking up presents for her family was wiping tears of joy when I entered the office. She hugged Cindy Smith after looking at the presents for her family. Bobbi Allen stands in her red Christmas sweater looking at the bags of gifts for other families. At the bottom is a poster I found in another room. You can click to enlarge it to see some of what those who use PEACE4ALL's services discuss.

Daily Herald Columnist Amy Mack Misses Some Points by Not Reading Aileen Seedorf’s Police Report

Yesterday, McHenry County Blog printed the text of the police report that Huntley School District 158 Board member Aileen Seedorf filed on November 15th with the Algonquin Police Department.

After reading Daily Herald columnist Amy Mack’s column, it’s pretty obvious that she did not read the police report before writing her column.

Those reading the police report would figure out that Seedorf has not lost her mind. She offers a reasoned explanation of what happened. To the best of her memory, fellow board member Tony (Anthony in the report) Quagliano said,

“I want to come over there
and smash your heads.”

He was referring to both Seedorf and Larry Snow, the other minority board member, both of whom keep asking really relevant, yet pesky, questions about school district affairs, past and present, even about the inadequate forensic audit that Certified Public Accountant Quagliano oversaw.

Questions you might ask if you were a really diligent board member.

Mack is correct that what is happening in the Huntley School District does deserve the headline,

"Wow, they really did that?"

Who could imagine that a board vice president (CPA Quagliano) would say something like that to two fellow board members?

Who could dream up a charge by a school board president (policeman Shawn Green) that two fellow board members were terrorists?

"Wow, they really did that?"

Mack got that part right.

But what comes to mind when I read this Mack paragraph:

“How often do you hear a school board president call board members ‘terrorists?’ Or have one of those ‘terrorists’ claim she felt so threatened at a board meeting that she asked police to investigate her fellow board members? Without calling it what it was -- pure politics -- police wisely declined.”
is
“Did Amy Mack really write that?

You have to know that Mack is a liberal, feminist Democrat.

You would never see something coming from Mack’s keyboard suggesting that a young woman had deserved a sexual assault because she was dressed too provocatively.

If any other woman told the police that she felt threatened, say in a domestic violence situation, Mack would take her side.

Mack could have written this comment from "our sympathy" under the Northwest Herald's "What's the big deal?" editorial replying to a comment which said, "I doubt Mrs. Seedorf felt threatened:"
"When women are abused by men this is the typical reaction they receive from others, even women.

"Our society tolerates and even supports abusive behavior resulting in continued abuse.

"I am offended that a trusted 158 board member is being reported as having acted in a manner that seems typical of an abuser.

"'She provoked me, she needs a spanking, I want to smash her head in.'

"WOW! WE need to stop abuse now, not support leaders who demonstrate it."
But that’s not the case when an ally of someone on Mack’s political hit list (Aileen Seedorf, in this case) feels worried enough to file a police report.

Then, it’s “pure politics.”

Well, we all have our blind spots.

Oh. And, if Mack would read, actually read the police report, she would see that Seedorf asked that no further action be taken.

Despite what is in Mack’s column, Seedorf never “asked police to investigate her fellow board members.” In fact, Mack makes two reportorial mistakes in that sentence. Not only did
Mack then takes some cheap shots at Snow, even justifying “anyone to want to throw a punch.”

And, I thought this was the season of Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men (and Women).

One final thought.

If Mack were ever threatened physically, would she just shrug her shoulders and say, “Oh, well?”

Turning Point Raises $75,000

When I was writing the story about Turning Point’s fund raiser at Sam’s Club on Sunday, one bit of information that I wanted to include was the total amount raised.

I heard on STAR 105 that a couple would match all contributions up to $25,000. I wanted to know if they made their goal.

Monday, I received this reply from Joe Kvidera, Events Coordinator:
“I won't know a "For sure" number till later in the week but I think it's safe to say we raised at least $75,000.”
So they raised their $50,000 goal, plus 50% more.

A successful fund raiser, even if it did rain.

Rain Falls on Turning Point's Sam's Club Star 105 Fund Raiser

My son was at a friend’s, so I finally got a chance to spend time at Sam’s Club’s photo machines.

I would not call it quality time, but the employees are quite pleasant and accommodating.

I’ve found it takes me up to an hour per flash card to adjust the pictures that I want to have printed. I had five to do.

Sam’s machines download so slowly. Nothing like Picasa at home.

Standing on the concrete floor reminds me most of my 1960 $1 an hour summer job manning the counter at McDonald’s (the Crystal Lake one that was just torn down, except with arches and 700,000, then 800,000 sold on the sign) after I graduated from high school in 1960.

On the way into Sam’s, it was impossible not to notice the big tent and Star 105 broadcasting trailer in the parking lot.

It was there for a big fund raiser for Turning Point, a domestic violence agency located in Woodstock.

I also saw smoke coming up from a grill and thought maybe I’d go get a bratwurst after I did some work.

About two, when I got hungry, I walked over. It was beginning to drizzle a bit.

I saw Stew Cohen, the station’s long-time news director and his son Brant.

Stew told me that his son had gone door-to-door in his neighborhood (east of McHenry Avenue, south of Route 14) and offered to play a song on his saxophone if people would make at least a donation of $1 to Turning Point.

Brant raised $171!

I got to the food area, heard they had two burnt brats, just like I like them, placed my order, opened my wallet and discovered it was empty. I had cleaned it out when my son when to Brookfield Zoo the day before.

So, I went back and got some cash.

When I returned, it was wet.

Sub-teenage girls were still practicing cheer leading routines.

But it was raining enough that people were crowding into the tent.

Not many people were sitting in the chairs watching the Sleeping Hollow band “33 1/3 .“ But, there was no way anyone could miss hearing them, no matter where they were.

When the station went live from under the tent, the band was asked to stop playing.

It was a good thing the teen musicians were under a tent. (You can see more of the band, plus other pictures that wouldn't fit in this article here. You can here them here. There's more on YouTube here.)

With all the electrical connections, I would have feared for their safety if they had been out in the open.

I walked around taking pictures, some of which you can see here. Others are here.

Another group of older girls were still practicing cheer leading routines.

A gravel truck driver had apparently been attracted to the fund raiser by what he had heard on the radio.

It wasn’t pouring yet.

After eating, I went back in to do my shopping and finish downloading my Cannon flash cards.

All three of the one-hour machines were busy, so I decided to try the wait-a-couple-of-days machine.

By then I was back to photos that I had taken in July, so what would a couple more days mean?

To my surprise and delight, I discovered this machined downloaded almost as fast as Google's Picasa.

I figured out how to do the editing, but its program will only allow one to get the photos one prints on a disk. So, I waited for the show downloads on one of the other machines when it opened up and just ordered disks.

By the time I left, some of my photos were printed and it was pouring.

There weren’t any high school girls practicing anymore.

Going to pick up my son for 5 o’clock church for the Huntley Brown piano concert at the First United Methodist Church of Crystal Lake, I turned on 105.3 and head Brant Cohen’s money-raising accomplishment being extolled by the disk jockette. Brant had been chosen to be the co-disk jockey of the hour.

And I heard the description of Turning Point:
“The only domestic violence agency in McHenry County with a shelter.”
Well chosen words, because there is another domestic violence agency in Crystal Lake called Peace4All…but it doesn’t have a shelter.

All photographs may be enlarged by clicking on them.

I found this poster cat at the offices of Crystal Lake’s domestic violence and sexual assault agency—PEACE4ALL. It’s located on Route 14 just northwest of Crystal Lake Avenue behind Wolf Reality.

Crystal Lake Kiwanis was shooting a publicity shot of the $500 check the now all-volunteer PEACE4ALL was being given and I saw this poster of a really laid back cat.

“Relaxed” is an understatement of how this cat looks sleeping on its back with legs outspread.

Underneath it says,
I'm fine.

Really.
there is a religious message from Matthew 11:28-
Come to me, ye who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
PEACE4ALL is a domestic violence agency where counselors offer Christian counseling as an option.

The McHenry County Board meets tonight at 7 P.M. in the building north of the county jail and courthouse.

Take a look at and think about adding to the comments on this Northwest Herald story on the cat tax.

Crystal Lake Kiwanis, whose noon meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Wednesday at Colonial Café on Rt. 14, has donated $500 to PEACE4ALL, the Crystal Lake-Rt. 14 headquartered domestic violence and sexual assault agency.

Lauri Sobel, Co-Director, is seen at the left of the picture receiving the ceremonial check from Kiwanis members Bettie Siavelis, V.P. of Algonquin Bank & Trust, Prudential Financial Services Association and new Kiwanis member Steven Podgorski and John Morrison.

Sobel is a Certified Domestic Violence Provider, certified by the State of Illinois’ Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The agency provides assistance to male and female victims of domestic and sexual violence, offering traditional, as well as Christian counseling.
