Federal Judge Dismisses Charges Against Nick Hurtgen in Hospital Fixing Scheme

Associated Press is reporting that one of ex-Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson’s top aides, who became managing director for the Chicago office of the investment banking house Bear, Stearns, has had corruption charges against him dismissed.

AP reporter Mike Robinson writes,
In dismissing the extortion charges against Hurtgen, Grady said the indictment "does not allege that Hurtgen knew that Levine was favoring Kiferbaum for a reason having nothing to do with Kiferbaum's qualifications to do the work."
More details on the case, which involved Stuart Levine, the man who admitted getting kickbacks from Kieferbaum Construction after Mercy Hospital selected the firm to build its Crystal Lake hospital, can be found here.

See also U.S. Attorney’s mention of Hurtgen in the George Ryan indictment under the section, “Role of Lobbyist Ron Swanson.”

Hurtgen’s continuing involvement in Wisconsin politics is documented here and here.

And, here is news that his very indictment was used to keep him out of a radio station deal that Tommy Thompson was putting together in South Dakota.

Finally, there is the connection to Rod Blagojevich fund raiser Tony Rezko.
