Poll Says MCCD Tax Hike Would Pass Easily

9/22/6 - The tax-financed $18,000 poll seeking advice on a $65 million bond issue was presented the McHenry County Conservation District’s board Thursday night.

Looking at the written summary, the pollster’s advice seems to be,
Go for it!
Almost two-thirds of the 500 polled would support a $65 million bond referendum to purchase additional open space—even if it would increase their taxes by about $35 per year for the next twenty years.

And the pollster concludes,
"In short, there is strong support for a $65 million bond referendum to acquire forests, wetlands and other natural areas, and it is very likely that residents would support an even larger bond amount if given the option."
The proposed MCCD bond issue would be on top of the 2001 $68.5 million bond issue that just barely passed April 3, 2001. It received just 51.3%, while open space referendums elsewhere in the collar counties were winning handily.

The 500-person poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5%.

You can see on this map how all precincts in McHenry County voted. (The brighter the yellow, the higher the "Yes" vote percentage.)

That close call is of obvious concern to the district.

Enough questions were asked by American Viewpoint’s pollster John Wilson to reach these conclusions:
· Recall of the 2001 bond referendum is fairly low. Even among residents who have lived in McHenry County for over 10 years, most do not recall the 2001 referendum.

· But almost 75% expressed confidence in the MCCD to use these type of funds wisely

· And a majority strongly approve of how the funds from the 2001 bond were spent.
“Support is not only high, but it is also widespread. Geographically, support is lowest in the 6th County Commission (sic) District.

But, even there, a majority would support this bond issue (53%) and support actually rises to 56% when they are informed of the cost.

Conversely, in the highly populated 2nd District almost (three) in every four residents said they would support this bond (73%). Take a look at how eastern Lake in the Hills and Crystal Lake south of Crystal Lake Avenue voted 5 years ago. That’s the 2nd district. It certainly was not a 73% majority.
