Why Fireworks Aren't Still Held at Veterans Acres
Way back in the 1960’s and 1970’s the Crystal Lake Jaycees put on fireworks at Veterans Acres.
It has a natural amphitheater that cannot be beat. Parking was a problem, of course, as it is at the Main Beach, where the Gala Committee now sponsors the exploding rockets.
While the Gala finances the fireworks and parade with its festival, the Jaycees just passed paper food bags from Jewel among the crowd for free will donations.
One year, the company hired to set off the fireworks didn’t bring enough people, so at least one Jaycee volunteered. He told me how frightening it was when he put a rocket in a too large pipe and the fireworks did not head straight into the sky.
I don’t know if it was the same year, but one year a young person found an unexploded rocket the morning after the celebration and set it off. He was injured pretty badly.
The fall out was that the Jaycees stopped sponsoring Crystal Lake’s fireworks.
