Pigeon Panic

During mid-May, when we attended the Old State Capitol Art Fair, I noticed a commotion in the air south of the Old State Capitol.

Pigeons were flying hither and yon.

Usually they fly in one direction as a flock. This day, it was every bird for itself.

Flying above and swooping down every once in a while was a raptor.

I didn’t get a picture of the hunter, but here’s one of the hunted.

When I saw the Chicago Tribune picture and cut line (which I cannot find online) about the hatching and banding of peregrine falcons in Evanston, it reminded me of what may have been lunch break time in Springfield.

The peregrine falcon was re-introduced to Illinois using funds from state income tax Non-Game Wildlife Check-Off Fund that the recently deceased Carl Becker stimulated.
