Protect Marriage Advisory Referendum Petitions Flowing In

Neither Democrat Governor Rod Blagojevich nor Republican candidate Judy Topinka has endorsed the Protect Marriage petition campaign. That could allow potential third party candidate the Rev. and State Senator James Meeks to steal the issue, if he wishes.

And, that’s exactly what he might do at his mega-church this weekend. McHenry County Blog has been told he is allowing the petitions to be circulated there.
If Meeks publicizes the event, he might be the big winner in the contest for disenfranchised social conservatives.

Here is the wording of the question, as it would appear on the November ballot:
Shall the Illinois General Assembly submit an amendment to Article IX of the Illinois State Constitution to the voters of the State of Illinois at large at the next General Election stating as follows:
To secure and preserve the benefits of marriage for our society and for future generations of children, a marriage between a man and a woman is the only legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State?
Even though an actual marriage protection constitutional amendment was credited with helping President George W. Bush win re-election in Ohio, Illinois Republican Party officials have not been of assistance in the Illinois petitioning effort.

That’s probably because Judy Topinka’s repeated appearances at Chicago Gay Pride Parades have not endeared her to social conservatives with an interest in the issue.

And Governor Blagojevich signed the legislation that basically forced the Gay Games Rowing Regatta down Crystal Lakers’ throats. That’s not meaningful statewide—unless things get out of control--but it is of potential significance locally.

Both the major supporting organizers—the Illinois Family Institute and the Family Taxpayers Network--have issued to communications to those they think are circulating petitions informing them that petition passers have an extra ten days beyond April 20th, the previously stated deadline. They are due in Springfield on Monday, May 8th.

IFI sent out emails and FTN made automated phone calls urging the collection of additional signatures. Petitions may be obtained at this web site.

283,111 signatures are required to put the advisory referendum question on the ballot. Naturally, the petition campaign organizers are planning to have extras in preparation for the inevitable challenge.

IFI reports that 45,000 individuals have made circulation commitments. They must be filed by Monday, May 8th, at State Board of Election offices in Springfield
