Congressman Donald Manzullo Requests State Department Probe of 16,000 Chinese-Made Computer Sale
I think this is a third generation story, but the second one—on Forbes.com —is the first time I saw it.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Congressman Donald Manzullo is challenging a 16,000 computer contract won by Vernon Hills computer supplier CDW. He is doing so because he thinks a Chinese government-owned company is providing subsidized computers.
Vernon Hills is not in Manzullo's district.

Realistically speaking, there's probably only a half a dozen companies that have the size to fulfill 16,000 computers. As someone who is in the business myself, the last thing we need is further price cuts from chinese competition. I don't have any particular love for any of the big name brands, but I think that the government should infuse our tax dollars back into our own country. CDW sells plenty of other brands. Even if the government pays more for them, they would be putting a greater percentage of the money back into our own economy.
Price cuts from Chinese competition are always bad....for people in the business. For the consumer, its a good thing.
When you suggest that government should "buy American" what you're really saying is "Spend more taxpayer dollars so we can get some of them", its a government subsidy in disguise (otherwise known as "Corporate Welfare".)
Personally, I want my government to get the best deal possible. If that means going to an offshore supplier, so be it. (Supply security issues aside). When the government buys something you DON'T supply, say automobiles, and buys a more expensive domestic product, you're subsidizing a business that can't compete with an offshore company. Every taxpayer not supplying the cars loses out.
If you want the government's business, earn it.
