“Detention for Jesus” - Making High School Kids Strong for Christ

Christ asks his followers to follow his example.

Crystal Lake South High School math teacher Brian Adcock tries to do just that.

“My goal is to try to make sure that the way I relate to them (his students) is the way Christ relates to us,” Adcock told the United Methodist Men of Crystal Lake the first Saturday morning of January.

“It’s how I project my respect,” he continued. “If I’m upset with a kid, I’m going to go up to the kid with a level voice.” And, he only does that “if they keep another kid from learning. I hope my actions show I care for them just like Christ cares for all of us.”

Adcock explained how “Detention for Jesus” got started.

Named by former South student Michael Golden, now attending Michigan’s Hope College, “Detention for Jesus” refers to how participants arrive at school just minutes prior to the beginning of their first period classes and that “tardies” are issued for individuals who are late to school.
