Part V – Personal PAC Legislative Questionnare – RU-486, Pharmacists and How Much Will You Bug Your Leader About Abortion

Next, Personal PAC moves on to “Emergency Contraceptives,” more commonly know as RU-486, which it insists is not “an abortion drug” and “is safe, effective, FDA approved (underlining in the original) method of preventing pregnancy after unprotected intercourse.” It “must be taken within a limited time period to be effective, and because the sooner the better it is taken the more effective it is, it is imperative that women have quick access to the medication.

Read the proposed legislative remedies and how a Personal PAC endorsee is supposed to treat his legislative leaders here.

Comments:
Just wanted to point out that the type of emergency contraception available in the US and approved by the FDA (brand name Plan B) is actually a progestin-only pill, which is also used in birth control pills. RU-486 is the name used for mifepristone, which is used as an abortifacient in certain countries, but in others, like China, it is used as emergency contraception. However, it is not available for this use in the United States.

However you personally feel about emergency contraception and abortion, they are in fact two different types of medical intervention, and it's certainly important for people on both sides of the issues to be well-informed. In fact, Plan B is much closer to progestin-only birth control than it is to mifepristone, both in its effect, its usage, and its chemical components.
