Don Udstuen’s Second Day on the Stand at George Ryan Corruption Trial
There were seven newspaper reporters in the Chicago federal courtroom while former Crystal Lake Republican Party strategist Don Udstuen faced withering questioning from George Ryan’s defense attorney Dan Webb.
The Tribune sent Rudolph Bush and Matt O'Connor. The Sun-Times had two people: Legal Affairs Reporter Abdon M. Pallasch and columnist Mark Brown. Associated Press’ Mike Robinson was on duty, as was Copley News’ Mike Ramsey. Roy Olmstead reported for the Daily Herald.
Headlines are not usually written by reporters, but give the editors’ ideas of what an article is about:
“Udstuen's credibility questioned by defense Monday,” the Tribune said.
“Ryan pal won't back down on cross,” was the way the Sun-Times headlined its internet AP story.
“Ryan's defense tries to portray witness as a liar,” was the headline on the Sun-Times own reporter’s story.
Sun-Times columnist Mark Brown’s piece was headed, “Witness' calm no match for Ryan lawyer's tenacity.”
Copley, owner of the Springfield’s State Journal-Register and the Peoria Journal-Star, among others, trumpeted, “Ryan defense puts Udstuen on hot seat for hours.”
”Ryan’s lawyer pounds witness,” was the Daily Herald’s headline.
